Listening to radio stations from the Americas

Radio Barigui 1560

R Barigui was heard during LEM317 together with Pertti Äyräs  in early February 2012. The station was lying on a clear split below 1560, a situation  also observed by at least Jari Ruohomäki amonth earlier. After many trials I finally got a superb FB message telling me “Sim!Obrigado!” on my question if my message had reach them! Not easy today to get answers from stations….

Radio Caicara 1020

R Caiçara, Porto Alegre, RS belongs to Rede Pampa de Comunicacão and used to transmit on 1020 AM up to November 1, 2013 when it switched to 780. The station was not an easy catch on 1020. I heard it during LEM330 in early March 2013 and at least Jari Ruohomäki and Pertti Äyräs have heard it earlier. A nice confirmation was received recently.

Radio Rubi_2 1670

Radio Rubi, Rafael Castillo, BA was heard for the first time in Scandinavia on May 24, 2013 by Hasse Mattison in Sweden (thanks for the info Gert Nilsson, GN!) and on May 25 simultaneously by a bunch of DXers. Henrik Klemetz helped these first-time loggers to also get a confirmation of their hearing. Since that time R Rubi has been among the most common X-band Argentinian, maybe together with Guabiyú 1610, R AM 16-20 1620 and R Diagonal 1630v. I sent a new reception report to Radio Rubi heard in Lemmenjoki during LEM333 last November and this time I was lucky to receive a confirmation from Gladis Bazan. Gracias!

Radio Cultura Pelotas 1320

Rádio Cultura, Pelotas, RS has been logged a few times in Scandinavia on 1320, a frequency holding quite a few Brazilians logged every now and then. The most common here is probably R Tropical, Curitiba PR followed by R Regional in Sobral, CE and CBN Foz do Iguacu, PR.  My report of R Cultura was confirmed by a nice Facebook message.

HJTA Radio María, Medellín 1320

Heard on, e.g., January 21, 2014 during a superb “Medellín opening”. I heard R María also during LEM274 in late January 2009 and this reception was recently confirmed via Facebook.

Radio Catatumbo 1150

This station I heard already during LEM274 in late January 2009 during perfect solar minimum openings. A rather rare Colombian station that I have tried to get confirmed  a couple of times earlier without success. I recently sent a follow up  and received a nice Facebook message from David Oswaldo Sánchez Claro Director Magazin AM en Directo. Gracias David!

Catatumbo is broadcasting from the small city of Ocaña situated in Norte de Santander some 150 km northwest of Cúcuta. Nowadays 1150 also has offered, e.g., Caracol Colombia, Armenia and RCN Neiva but both are also quite rare. R Venezuela, Punto Fijo is by far the most common “Orinoco station” to be heard in Scandinavia.

Frequencia Bolivariana 1160

Frequencia Bolivariana 1160 was one of the many Colombians heard by several DX-ers in southern Finland during the strong opening on January 21. The station actively announced the web-address http://www.upb.edu.co, i.e., the address to Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana en Montería. A nice FB message confirmed my hearing.

In 1970 I heard HJAZ Emisora Sinú in Montería which at that time was on 1156v (no digital frequency measurements at that time!). Since Emisora Sinú disappeared long ago, it appears that Frequencia Bolivariana took over the left over call signs HJAZ when they started.

Frequencia U 940  Freq U 940

Frequencia U, 940  in Medellín was heard on January 21, 2014  in my home QTH in Borgå and simultaneously it was logged by several DX-ers in the southern parts of Finland. This date produced an A;M band with strong signals on mos frequencies above 900 kHz. Stations from the Medellín area were especially favored. The station was heard with a weak but stable signal for some 20 minutes. A promt email confirmed my reception.

WDKN Dickson 1260

WDKN Dickson was a surprise, at least for myself, during the LEM307 together with Hannu Niilekselä. The station booming in from nowhere with country and a perfect TOH ID that you can hear on the enclosed mp3. I got a response already over a year ago but I wanted a somewhat better response, and that I gos in the form of an FB message! Thanks WDKN in Dickson, Tennessee, USA!

Radio Patria 1540

This station was heard e.g. during LEM333 in the beginning of November 2013. I heard R Patria for the first time already in the beginning of the 90’s but I never managed to get a verification. Last November the station was heard back and forth for almost two hours, sometimes disturbed by another Spanish speaking station (presumably R Mon) and a Brazilian carrying R Aparecida-programming. Patria  announced , e.g., a spot for  “Farmacia Gadecort” anchored by the station’s technician Gian Carlo Fallini who also confirmed my report. Gracias Gian Carlo! And thanks to HK for listening to my clip and to JPR for his help with v/s information.
