Listening to radio stations from the Americas

Sim Tupi 1590

A surprising X-mas present received a couple of hours ago in the form of a confirmation via Facebook on my reception of Sim Tupi 1590 in February 2012. At that time 1590 was totally dominated by this and R Restauracã0, Caruarú, PE. Under previous years, 1590 has not been a good frequency due to the DRM transmitter that used to be on on 1593. Fortunately this is now gone and the frequency is wide open for a variety of possibilities for new and nice catches.

Radio Miriam 2012

A truly nice X-mas greeting from this rare Brazilian here in Scandinavia was received yesterday. Muito Obrogado!

voluntarios 1540

R Voluntários da Pátria is situated in the western part of Pernambuco in the city of Ouricuri with a population of ca. 70.000 inhabitants. R Voluntários has been heard every now and then on 1540 AM. I have logged the station both in Borgå and in Lemmenjoki. The frequency holds a number of Brazilians frequently heard in Finland such as Nova Difusora, Osasco, SP; BaixaVerde, Joao Cámara, RN; and R Sant’Ana, Tianguá, CE.

I have reported Voluntário several times, but it was not until I got a fresh v/s from Jari Ruohomäki that a confirmation of my audio file was confirmed. Thanks a lot Jari!

La voz del Rio Tarqui

Definitely one of my best loggings from Ecuador was made on May 22, 2005 around 0130 UTC, just at sunrise in Finland, in the form of HCJA5 La Voz del Rio Tarqui, Cuenca. It is well known that late May and early June can be very good times for receptions especially towards Bolivia, but also towards Perú and Ecuador.

My logging of La Voz del Rio Tarqui on 1290 maybe unique in Europe, but the stations has been logged occasionally earlier on the short wave bands. The probably first logging of the station in Finland was done by Timo Kajamaa in 1971 on 3395 in the 90 m.b. Jari Korhonen heard the station on the new frequency of 3286 in 1983 and the station was logged by several Scandinavian DX-ers on this frequency up to 1992 when it left the short wave bands. La Voz del Rio Tarqui was established in 1960 by Don Manuel Pulla.

For me it turned out to be a long journey towards a confirmation of my AM report. Not surprisingly, the Master in accomplishing this was Henrik Klemetz (HK). Henrik had several contacts during September and October this year, both by phone and by emails, with the station’s Gerente General Rosa Maria Pulla, who also phoned Henrik at least once via Skype. All in all without Henrik’s determined help I would never have got a verification from La Voz del Rio Tarqui.

Thanks Henrik and I hope to see Josefina, Ida Sofia and yourself in Borgå in January!

A very nice confirmation received from this rare station here in Scandinavia received in Lemmenjoki. Marcelo Pola was amazed that their signal could be received from so far away. The frequency is very interesting indeed from a Scandinavian perspective. There is actually only one “dominant” on the frequency:  ZYH714 R Globo Gama, Brasilia, DF.  The second most common, even though pretty rare, is ZYI202 R Espirito Santo, Vitória, ES. 1160 holds numerous Brazilian stations to be hunted for and with reasonable powers.

To hear anything in Scandinavia from Brazil on AM 800 requires very selective cx and a lot of luck. On February 2, 2010 very good cx towards Brazil was recorded already during the early night hours in Lemmenjoki. Two Brazilians were battling for the channel. Of course the superior dominant MEC of Rio de Janeiro with 100 kW but also another one which turned out to be R Universidade, Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul! This station is the voice of Universidade Federal de Santa Maria.

A week ago I received, after some efforts, a nice email from Milton Oliveira, Programador/Webmaster confirming my reception. Milton also included acorrect QSL-card as a pdf-file. The card was signed by the stations Diretor Celso Augusto Fontoura Franzen.

Radio San Carlos located in the city of San Carlos the capital of Estado de Cojedas in the Vicinity of Maracaibo. During conditions towards Venezuela 920 is usually effectly blocked by Radio Nueva Esparta in Porlamar here in Scandinavia. I heard R San Carlos in October 2011 in Lemmenjoki and my reception report was kindly verified by William José Vera. Muy gracias William!

This station has been logged at several occasions during this and last year in Scandinavia. The frequency, 1360, is usually “blocked” by Rádio Bandeirantes of Rio de Janeiro. The frequency however holds several non-common brazilians that have been irregularly logged here. Among these can be mentioned R Cultura, Paulo Afonso, CE; R Cidade, Pato Branco PR (rare); R Ouro Branco, Currais Novos, RN (rare) and ; R Belos Vales, Ibirama, SC.

I had the opportunity to hear R Iracema on May 8, 1999  (UTC) with good signal, and with the complete absence of the dominant R Bandeirantes. My report was confirmed by João Bosco Farias Aragão, Diretor Geral with a four page letter (that was the good old times!), three audio casetts, a huge amount of station information etc. We, that were active long ago, remember the feeling when we got a notice from the local post office that one should pick up a postage from abroad. This was always a thrill.

From the QSL-letter from R Iracema I cite:

I include an mp3 audio below containing a fragment of the massive recordings I received.

CX146 Radio Carmelo transmitting on 1460 is a very rare Uruguay-station to be heard in Finland and Scandinavia. The station was first logged in Finland in Lemmenjoki during the LEM85-pedition (Håkan Sundman and Mika Mäkeläinen) on October 26, 1995 and a couple of weeks later by LEM87 (Jarmo Havukunnas and Jan-Erik Österholm). It would the take more than 10 years before the station was logged again in Finland by LEM239 (Jari Ruohomäki and Mika Mäkeläinen) and more recently by LEM290 Pertti Äyräs and Jan-Erik Österholm) in early February 2010. The only common station on 1460 from South America (excluding Brazil) that can be said to be regularly heard is Nuevo Continente in Bogotá.

It was therefore very nice to receive a message via Facebook from Radio Carmelo recently confirming my reception of the station on January 29, 2010. The bridge seen on the picture above, the Puente Giratorio de Carmelo celebrated it’s 100th Anniversary this spring and is also pictured on the City Seal of Carmelo.

The frequency 1470 kHz has for long been one of the best so called propagation indicator frequencies on the AM band here in Scandinavia. At least earlier, I used to first check this frequency to check where the signals were moving. A reason for that was – and still is – that 1470 is free of interferences from European stations, the closest European channels being on 1467 and 1476, respectively. And 1470 has turned out to be a gold mine that never disappoints DXers, whether we look for catches from US/Canada, Central America, Orinoco, the Andean countries, Brazil or the La Plata region. During my years, I have received QSLs  from 31 stations in South America transmitting on 1470. In addition to these many stations from US, México and the Caribbean. And the funny thing is, the frequency never seems to disappoint us, new stations are regularly heard.

A personally nice memory is the logging, on June 2, 1991, of ZYH665 Radio Guanacés de Itapajé, CE, BRA. The station was first logged in Finland by Pertti Äyräs on May 20, 1991 only two weeks after the station went on air on May 5, 1991. At the time of these logings the name Rádio Guanacés was not listed but WRTH1991 Edition listed a Brazilian CP-station as Rádio A Voz de Itapajé Limitada. I sent a tentative report including an old fashioned tape recording to Itapajé with the question whether the station really was on air. I received a very nice confirmation from José Ezaclyr Montenegro, Diretor Artístico and Eldo Rios Louzada, Diretor Geral together with half a kilogram of Brazilian coffee (!), station materials and a 60 min cassette including beautiful Brazilian music from the program “Super Paradao Sertanejo” and a long personal greeting which can be heard on the enclosed mp3 audio file.

Today Rádio Guanacés has an agenda focusing on the value conflicts arising within the local and national social sectors and finding a solution to the same. Rádio Guanacés continuously help local institutions in democratic debates concerning the region of Itapajé Uruburetama.
