Listening to radio stations from the Americas

KWOK Hoquiam WA USA 1490

ESPN 1490

KWOK is a regularly heard WA-station in Lemmenjoki, however not the most common WA-station on 1490. The mos common ones are KEYG Grand Coulee, KYNR Toppenish, KLOG Kelso and KTEL Walla Walla. KWOG carries ESPN and belongs to the Grays Harbor Radio Group that also owns KXRO 1320, KDUX104.7 and KIX 95.3 all serving the Morris County around Aberdeen WA. After a couple of f/ups I received a confirmation of my reception of KWOK from October 2012 from Pat Anderson, Operations Manager, Grays Harbor Radio Group. Thanks Pat!

ZYJ791 Rádio Cultura, Xaxim, SC BRA 1490

Radio Cultura 1490

1490 is for some reason a rather tricky frequency for Brazilian loggings in Northern Europe. During the last couple of years the mos commonly logged has been Rádio Onda Viva, Araguari, MG on its clear split above 1490. But also Onda Viva is pretty difficult. Rádio Cultura, Xaxim, SC has been logged in Lemmenjoki by at least Jari Ruohomäki and myself during the last years. Xaxim is a town and municipality in the state of Santa Catarina located some 600 km west of the State’s Capital Florianópolis close to the boarder of Argentina. Rádio Cultura started broadcasting in 1960 and carries 2000 watts day and 250 watts nigh. A short message of confirmation was receives recently from Gerencia Administrativa, Rádio Cultura Xaxim.

CX118 Radio La Voz de Artigas, Artigas, URG 1180

La Voz de Artigas   La Voz de Artigas_2

CX118 Radio La Voz de Artigas was heard in Lemmenjoki on January 28, 2008. Simultaneously, neighboring Radiomundo in Montevideo came in with a superb signal. Even though I did not get a legal ID local commercials made the identification rather simple, especially with the help of Henrik Klemets. Thanks HK. I have tried several times to send reports and f/up of this reception with no results. Surprisingly,  I some days ago received a much wanted email from the Gerencia of Radio La Voz de Artigas confirming my reception. The station became my URG-verification # 50!

KCTO Cleveland MO USA 1160

KCXL KCTO   KCTO AM 1160

Unexpectedly KCTO Cleveland MO faded up on 1160 just after the dominating WYLL with a nice ID “KCXL Liberty 1140 AM The Oldies Station and KCTO Cleveland 1160…”. I found the ID when going through some Lemmenjoki  files from 2011. The station has been heard a few times earlier during the last years here in Finland. KCTO is the sister station to KCXL Liberty MO on 1140 located just nort of Kansas City MO. GM David Brewer confirmed my audio mp3 and told “…you did indeed hear KCTO. we still own it but a latino group rents it from us now”. As of March 2012 KCTO has been carrying SS programming using the slogan “La Super X”.

WNBP Newburyport, MA, USA 1450

WNBP 1450

“And now more Legendary Songs and Legendary Singers, AM 14-50 WNBP” was the ID after the TOH news on 1450 in early March 2013 in Lemmenjoki.

Operations Manager and one of the partners of the owner of WNBP Pete Falconi says “Dear Jan-Erik. Thank you for your email and the information contained within.  You most definitely heard WNBP AM1450 in Newburyport, Massachusetts, USA.  The mp3 file attached to your email confirms it.  It’s very exciting to hear from you and learn of your family and your background in DX-ing.  We’re proud to say we have a listener in Finland!”

Thanks Pete!

ZYL352 Rádio Globo, Passos, MG BRA 1340

R Globo Passos 1340

First time I have heard Rádio Globo on AM 1340 and according to all lists the only Globo station on 1340 is located in Passos, MG. The logging was made in early March 2013 during LEM330. It has to be noted, that I did not hear any local ID but being the only Globo here it must be this station.

My mp3 audio was confirmed by technicians oin Rio de Janeiro thanks to the CBN/Globo coordinator Juliana Paiva.

OBX7M Radio Pachatusan, Sicuani, PER 1240

R Pachatusan has been logged here in Borgå, my home QTH both on May 9 and May 17 on it’s slight split frequency of approximately 1239.92. During cx towards Perú 1240 has also been offering both Radio Líder, Arequipa, the most dominant peruvian here, but with a bad modulation, and a little bit lower in frequency and R María, Chilca a little above Pachatusan. R Pachasutan has been logged on several occasions also earlier this spring both in Sweden, Norway and Finland.

The station is transmitting from Sicuani in the Vilcanota valley in the Province of Canchis, Departamento de Cuzco. The city is located a little over 100 km southeast of the city of Cuzco.

Thanks to the v/s help from Arnstein Bue (ABU) I received a friendly email from Jose Luis Quintasi Valer,
Pachatusan Deportes.

ZYH420 CBN, Macapá, AP BRA 670

CBN MACAPA 670

CBN Macapá, Amapá (AP) was heard on 670  late October 2011 during LEM 307 during very good Brazil/La Plata cx.

As probably known to LA freaks, and especially Brazil freaks, the  frequency range 630-700 AM is, for some reason, very difficult for loggings from Brazil here in Scandinavia. Although this frequency range holds more than 100 stations very few have been logged here. The most common are R Bandeirantes, Porto Alegre, RS on 640 and R Farrouphilia, Porto Alegre, RS on 680. The situation has been improved now, however, when the Norwegian superpower on 675 has closed down making both 670 and 680 more clean for catches.

My report of CBN Macapá was verified by the Globo/CBN coordinator in Rio de Janeiro. Muito obrigado Juliana!

XECV Ciudad Valles, SL, MEX 600

Hunting for radio stations from México has been one of the major activities in Lemmenjoki. Usually stations from México are heard during better than average cx towards North America and heard together with US-stations. Typically, the MEX-stations fade in and out but the pretty frequent ID’s given make the identification of MEX-stations rather easy.

During LEM294 in October  2010 we had pretty good openings towards Mexico. At the same time surprisingly not very selective cx towards the US south-west.

XECV Ciudad Valles, San Luís Potosí “La Gran Compania” was a rare mexican to be identified in a mess consisting of WMT Cedar Rapids IA, KSJB Jamestown ND and CJWW Saskatoon SK. The mexican format was, however easy to follow.

XECV confirmed my reception some time ago. The frequency 600 is a rather rare MEX-frequency up here in Scandinavia.
