Listening to radio stations from the Americas

ZYJ674 Radio Vilhena

Radio Vilhena AM 1450 transmits from the city with the same name and thesite lies in the easternmost part of Rondonia. Radio Vilhena has been heard a couple of times in Scandinavia. If I remember correctly, Ole Forr in Norway was the first, or among the first,to catch the station more than 10 years ago. My own reception stems from one of the recent peditions to Lemmenjoki. A short confirmation recently arrived (thanks JPR!) and became my verified Brazilian # 10 on 1450.

Radio Paiquere

Rádio Paiqueré, Londrina, PR was one of my nicest Brazilian catches in October 2010 in Lemmenjoki fading up over Argentinian LS1 R de la Ciudad of Buenos Aires with a decent signal. 1110 usually offers only LS1 during southerly conditions. If I call correctly only two other Brazilians has been logged on 1110 in Scandinavia before: R Tabajará, Joao Pessoa, PB logged many times in the 70’s and R Litoral, Cascavel, CE. R Paiqueré confirmed my report with a short notice via Facebook.

Radio Cultura 1490

1490 is for some reason a rather tricky frequency for Brazilian loggings in Northern Europe. During the last couple of years the mos commonly logged has been Rádio Onda Viva, Araguari, MG on its clear split above 1490. But also Onda Viva is pretty difficult. Rádio Cultura, Xaxim, SC has been logged in Lemmenjoki by at least Jari Ruohomäki and myself during the last years. Xaxim is a town and municipality in the state of Santa Catarina located some 600 km west of the State’s Capital Florianópolis close to the boarder of Argentina. Rádio Cultura started broadcasting in 1960 and carries 2000 watts day and 250 watts nigh. A short message of confirmation was receives recently from Gerencia Administrativa, Rádio Cultura Xaxim.

R Globo Passos 1340

First time I have heard Rádio Globo on AM 1340 and according to all lists the only Globo station on 1340 is located in Passos, MG. The logging was made in early March 2013 during LEM330. It has to be noted, that I did not hear any local ID but being the only Globo here it must be this station.

My mp3 audio was confirmed by technicians oin Rio de Janeiro thanks to the CBN/Globo coordinator Juliana Paiva.

Radio Globo Rondonia 1310

R Globo Rondonia began it’s broadcasts in December 2012 and has been heard several times in Scandinavia since then. My own logging was made during the LEM330 pedition last February. A short email confirmed my reception.

1310 is an interesting frequency for DX towards Brazil since it holds almost 20 stations a major part of which has not yet been heard in our part of the world. Today the perhaps most common Brazilian station is R Cidade, Esperanca, PB.

cbn-foz-no-google-Mais

CBN’s transmitter in Foz do Iguacu, Paraná on 1320 is heard every now and then but the dominating Brazilian stations on 1320 over the last yearshas  been R Tropical, Curitiba PR and R Regional of Sobral, Ceará. Some days ago I received a confirmation of my report from February 2013. More than a dozen Brazilians still remain to be caught by Scandinavian DXers.

The city Foz de Iguazu is one of Brazil’s most-frequented tourist destinations. Most tourists are Brazilians and Argentines, but Canadians, Americans, British, Germans, Italians, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Korean, Japanese and Chinese tourists are also numerous. The city has about 100 hotels and inns. The main attraction probably is the magnificent waterfalls Iguacazu Falls which is some three times bigger what comes to flow capacity than Niagara Fallas. Iguazu Falls is located at the border between Brazil (state of Paraná) and Argentina.

Radio Liberdade 1500

Rádio Liberdade was surprisingly found when going through some audio files from LEM319 in October 2012. The station faded up with a simple “Rádio Liberdade AM 1500 kilohertz” and the ID was also verified by Pertti Äyräs and Jari Ruohomäki. Thanks boys!

The city of Cangucu is located some 300 km southwest of the State Capital Porto Alegre and some 50 km west of Pelotas and holds some 60.000 inhabitants.

This log was a real surprise, since 1500 holds a number of Brazilian stations that are commonly heard here up in the north such as Jacuípe, BA; Montanhesa, MG; Floresta, PA; Fraternidade, SP and Cumbica, SP. The frequency has, however, not given too many logs from Brazil during the last couple of years – maybe because of the state of the present solar cycle. Who knows.

It was satisfying to get a short confirmation from Rádio Liberdade in less than a day!

Radio Frequencia_2 1380

Rádio Frequencia was surprisingly fading up with a “Rádio Frequencia News 1380 kilohertz” ID on late October 2011 in Lemmenjoki. The frequency is a gold mine with quite a big number of stations that have never been heard in Scandinavia. The stations transmits from Garopaba, a beach side Santa Catarina city, that has been completely changed since the 1970s when it was a small fisherman town. Today Garopaba offers nice hotels and many first class beaches.

Thanks – Muito Obrigado to Bel Cristini for a rapid confirmation and to Pertti Äyräs and Jari Ruomomäki for checking my audio file.

ZYK354 R Rosario 1210

Rádio Rosario, Serafina Correa, RS was heard in Lemmenjoki in October 2010 on 1190 surprisingly fading up over R América, Buenos Aires with a pretty good signal just in time for a local break after the top of the hour and before the start of programming from Milícia da Imaculada. A nice confirmation was received via Facebook from Camilia Panassolo. The first BRA-verification on 1190  for me from one of the southern states of Brazil.

The frequency 1190 is occupied by a number of Brazilian stations all of which have the possibilities of being audible in Scandinavia during selective openings. During more northerly  cx the most common Brazilians here are CBN Natal RN, R Juazeiro BA and R Rio Vermelho GO. R América BA, however, usually completely dominates the frequency during southernly cx making it difficult  for stations from the states of, e.g., SP, RS, SC and PR to be audible.

Rádio Rosario was established in mid-December 1984 and serves the entire Serafinense region of Rio Grande do Sul and mostly carries religious programming..

Radio Tupanci

This rare Brazilian was heard in late January 2009 during the LEM274 together with Pertti Äyräs. After many inquiries I finally recently got a surprising e-mail from Leandro Comunelho of Rádio Tupanci transmitting on AM 1250. As we know, 1250 offers a lot of opportunities for new loggings from Brazil here in the Scandinavian region. Interestingly enough, during the years only R Globo, Vitória and R Metropolitana, Vespasiano, MG can be said to have been regularily heard here. Since the frequency holds almost 20 stations there is a lot of opportunities for new catches. Unfortunately, though, many of the stations carry religious network programming during the night hours here up in the north making it extremely difficult to get a local ID. In the case of R Tupanci I had the luck to catch a perfect TOH-ID (4 minutes after the hour) including call sign, station name, frequency, power as well as Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul”. As with stations from México, if one happens to hear an ID they usually contain so much information, beyond the station’s name, that the identification is quite easily made possible.
