Listening to radio stations from the Americas

Category Archives: Recent QSLs

A very nice confirmation received from this rare station here in Scandinavia received in Lemmenjoki. Marcelo Pola was amazed that their signal could be received from so far away. The frequency is very interesting indeed from a Scandinavian perspective. There is actually only one “dominant” on the frequency:  ZYH714 R Globo Gama, Brasilia, DF.  The second most common, even though pretty rare, is ZYI202 R Espirito Santo, Vitória, ES. 1160 holds numerous Brazilian stations to be hunted for and with reasonable powers.

KBLY was surpisingly heard on 1260 last week in Lemmenjoki. The more common KTRP Weiser at the same time. Nice for me since it was the first time I have heard KBLY. A short email from Mike Nelson, NewsTalk 690 KBLI-AM and 1260 KBLY-AM rapidly confirmed my reception. Thanks Mike!

To hear anything in Scandinavia from Brazil on AM 800 requires very selective cx and a lot of luck. On February 2, 2010 very good cx towards Brazil was recorded already during the early night hours in Lemmenjoki. Two Brazilians were battling for the channel. Of course the superior dominant MEC of Rio de Janeiro with 100 kW but also another one which turned out to be R Universidade, Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul! This station is the voice of Universidade Federal de Santa Maria.

A week ago I received, after some efforts, a nice email from Milton Oliveira, Programador/Webmaster confirming my reception. Milton also included acorrect QSL-card as a pdf-file. The card was signed by the stations Diretor Celso Augusto Fontoura Franzen.

KWVR was heard with rather stable signals last week in Lemmenjoki. Of the five OR-stations on 1340 KWVR has been on the most wanted list for years. During last week the (October 20-27) the cx type favored heavily stations from the Mountain states  and the Pacific North West of USA. One should be very careful not to mix this with a much more common station on 1340, namely KWOR of Worland WY!

Alyssa Werst, Operations and Sales manager of KWVR confirmed by submitted mp3-audio in a couple of hours telling me “…And yes, that’s us!  The liner (male voice) is a canned liner of ours, and the weather report is my voice.  We are located in the north eastern corner of Oregon and it’s snowing today, and have at least a 6,000 listeners in our area.  We are glad you were able to reach us.” Thanks Alyssa for you nice response!

WGBW has been heard by several listeners in Scandinavia this fall. Formerly transmitting from Two Rivers WI, WGBW signed on from its new transmitter site in Denmark, WI on September 14, 2011 with 10,000 watts day/500 watt night signal. The station is owned by Mark Heller who also quickly confirmed my submitted mp3-audio from October 26, 2012 covering a legal ID and a local weather report. Thanks Mark!

KATL Miles City was heard with crystal clear signal and was alone on 770 a morning last week during LEM319. No signs of the dominants KTTH Seattle or CHQR Calgary! Karla Ross Allison rapidly confirmed my mp3-audio with the words “Yes you did indeed catch our station top of the hour id and intro to the ABC news. I’ve had others send us mp3’s that they caught but this was the clearest I’ve heard.” Thanks Karla!

KTRC was logged during the on-going LEM319 DX-pedition to Lemmenjoki by Hannu Niilekselä and myself. A very rare log indeed. The station faded up on 1260 just in time for the top on the our ID over CFRN Edmonton that at the same time faded down! KTRC was audible only for some 20 seconds but the ID was luckily very clear and KTRC’s PD Brad Brown noted “…I am the Program Director of KTRC-AM Talk 1260 in Santa Fe, New Mexico and can confirm that is my voice”. Thanks Brad for your fast response and reception confirmation of KTRC! Citing from the stations WEB page one notes that KTRC carries a progressive talk radio programming and radio shows consisting primarily of news, talk, comedy, interviews, guest editorials, and listeners’ telephone calls.

Radio San Carlos located in the city of San Carlos the capital of Estado de Cojedas in the Vicinity of Maracaibo. During conditions towards Venezuela 920 is usually effectly blocked by Radio Nueva Esparta in Porlamar here in Scandinavia. I heard R San Carlos in October 2011 in Lemmenjoki and my reception report was kindly verified by William José Vera. Muy gracias William!

KLAC was heard in Lemmenjoki on January 31, 2009 during a good opening towards the Pacific sea board of the US. This frequency is occupied by many potential stations to be heard in Scandinavia, e.g., WNAX Yankton ND – one of the most frequently listed -; KNRS of Salt Lake City UT and; KVI Seattle WA, this excluding several stations from Canada. The sports station phading in was a nice surprise as it turned out to be “AM 5-70 in Los Angeles”. I got a rapid response from GM and PD Don Martin of KLAC telling me that it was KLAC ‘s announcer Tomm Looney that I had on my included mp3-file which I have included below.

KLAC Los Angeles CA 31.1.2009

Thanks BIH (Berndt-Ivan Holmberg) for v/s info on WSUA Miami, FL 1260. This station was heard in Lemmenjoki in October 2011 in a mess of stations including WMKI R Disney, WSKO Syracuse interfered by Colombians! I have previously heard this station a couple of times in 2009 and 2010 but my reception reports have never been verified. Now, thanks to BIH’s fresh contact I got a a confirmation in less than half an hour from Tomas Martinez, VP and GM of WSUA. Thanks a lot Tomas for your kind effort!
