Listening to radio stations from the Americas

WQSC 1340

WQSC Charleston SC is heard every now and then in the northern parts of the Nordic countries. My own logging of WQSC, or “1340 The Voice”, was made in Lemmenjoki in early March 2013. I have been very lazy with sending reception reports during the last half year but some days ago I sent a report to WQSC and my report was confirmed by a Facebook message. In addition to confirming my written px-details, the station mentions that they are not allowed to open attached files (such as mp3’s) due to the spam risk. This is probably the case with very many stations today, so it is worthwhile to describe what you heard as well as you can in writing and not only rely on that the receiver will open your attached audio file.

XENK 620

XENK was heard during LEM319 in late October 2012. Even though I did not get a full ID after the National Anthem was played the program format was unmistakable. My mp3 was confirmed through a Facebook message.

WJYP 1300

WJYP was a nice surprise to find on 1300. The station faded up just for a short while with  at that time (in February 2011) a Gospel format and the slogan “The Dove”. Nowadays the stion goes under the slogan “The Jock” and carries sports in parallell witgh it’s sister station WMON Mongomery on 1340. A short email confirmed my mp3 that also has been confirmed by e.g. Hannu Niilekselä, Håkan Sundman etc.

My rather long – three weeks – absence from this blog was due to Heidi’s and my trip to Atlanta GA where we visited our daughter Anna and her husband. We also had the opportunity to drive rather heavily in Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana during this visit.

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 11,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 4 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

LEM333

Lake Kuivajärvi, Lemmenjoki at 4 p.m. November 3, 2013.

My absence from this site for a couple of weeks is due to the fact that I was spending 11 days in Lemmenjoki hunting for something new. Unfortunately the proton level remained above normal during the whole period which made loggings from North America almost impossible. The cx was constantly pushed down south to the southern parts of Brazil and some La Plata as well. The by far best usable antenna during this period was the 255 beverage. With the exception of a rather good opening towards the Caribbean and Orinoco on November 4 and a nice opening towards Perú on Novemebr 13 on the 280 degree beverage the 255 wire was in constant use recording more southerly stations. Some nice loggings from November 4 can be mentioned: the PR-stations WDNO 960, WOSO 1030 and WLRP. So far identified, for me new peruvians, from the 13.11 opening are Chami R, Otuzco 1140, R Líder Cajamarca 970 and R Moderna, Lima 930.

KUFO Portland OR 970

KUFO Portland OR on 970 is a pretty commonly heard US West Coast station in the northern parts of Scandinavia. Previously KUPL and later KCMD was re-assigned the KUFO call letters in March 2011. When I heard it in October 2012 it was heavily disturbed by KBUL Billings MT. Milt McConnel promptly verified my mp3. Thanks Milt!

KADI 1340

KADI Springfield, MO was heard in Lemmenjoki last October with a nice id “The Laura Ingraham Show coming up at 8 am right here on AM 13-40 the Ozark’s Big Talker”. Rod Kittleman confirmed my mp3 audio. Thanks Rod!

WMIN 1010

Last October and in early November the frequency 1010 gave many surprising loggings from the US. A frequency normally blocked by CFRB Toronto, WINS New York and a couple of CBC power houses were periodically surprisingly weak which offered the possibilities for many rare US-stations to appear. During this period at least KXXT Tolleson AZ, KCHJ Delanio CA, WMIN Sauk Rapids MN and KXEN St. Louis MO were logged by LEM319 and LEM320. I heard WMIN Sauk Rapids/St. Cloud on October 26 with a rather nice signal for a while giving the slogan ID “Uptown 10-10”. Mark Persons rapidly confirmed my reception. Thanks Mark!

Radio Panamericana 1140

Radio Panamericana, Girardot has been received quite regularly during the last seasons in Northern Europe. 1140 is a rare HJ-frequency though, and earlier R Paísa of Medellin tended to be dominating here. Last October I heard Panamericana with a rather stable signal for over an hour even if the Canadian and WQII San Juan, PR tried to do their best.

Mil gracias Jovanny!
Below a short mp-3 of my reception.

ESPN 1490

KWOK is a regularly heard WA-station in Lemmenjoki, however not the most common WA-station on 1490. The mos common ones are KEYG Grand Coulee, KYNR Toppenish, KLOG Kelso and KTEL Walla Walla. KWOG carries ESPN and belongs to the Grays Harbor Radio Group that also owns KXRO 1320, KDUX104.7 and KIX 95.3 all serving the Morris County around Aberdeen WA. After a couple of f/ups I received a confirmation of my reception of KWOK from October 2012 from Pat Anderson, Operations Manager, Grays Harbor Radio Group. Thanks Pat!
