The continuing story of Latin American pennants from my collection: Brazil!
The following stations are represented; R Bandeirantes 11925; R Inconfidencia 6010; R Alvorada de Londrina 3335; R Anhanguara 4915; R Guarujá 5980; R Brasil Central 4995; R Tamandaré 3265; R Difusora de Teresina 4845; R Difusora Taubaté 4855; R Uirapurú de Fortaleza 1360; Emissora Rural 5025; R Liberdade de Caruarú 1470; R Industrial de Juiz de Fora 4925. All of the below pennants received during the 60’s.
The continuing story of LA pennants will continue.
During the 60’s and 70’s many Argentinian stations were kind enough to include a pennant as a souvenir. Times has changed.
The pennants below come from:
R Cordoba 1210; R Bahia Blanca840; R Rio Cuarto 1010; R Del Sur 1080; R Venado Tuerto 1460; R Chaco 1150; R Splendid Rosario 1210; R Cordoba 1210; R Nihuil 680; R del Plata 1030; R San Rafael 1170; R El Mundo 1070; R San Nicolas 1430. Frequencies given are the ones applicable during earlier years.
Some Central American pennants I have received from Latin American radio stations during the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s are presented here. Pennants from South America will follow.
The QSL-letters received in the past by snail mail, especially if they where thick and containing a nice pennant, was one of the highlights of the past for a DXer. Today we can only hope that our email responses also include some logos (which of course can be downloaded from the web), and more importantly, some authentic and personal station audio recordings. Time passes and we as DXers have to adjust to the changing world. And we have done just that! Some 10 years ago many DXers argued that QSLs received by email could not be accepted. All of them, or at least 90% of them, have changed their minds. The same happened with the introduction of SDRs – many of us looked upon these equipments as not true equipments for DXing. It was more or less seen as cheating! Surprisingly – or maybe not – most DXers, if not all, are nowadays equipped with SDRs in their DX endeavours! SDRs are for DXers as are the doping methods in sports….?
Pertti Äyräs and myself have many times discussed and memorized the situation on the AM band during the late 60’s and early 70’s during our many peditions together. How could it be possible, e.g., to catch so many very rare Latin American stations in downtown Turku with either an indoor loop or some wires of 30-100m in lenght? And the band was filled and clear! One can only imaging what the result had been if SDRs had been in place at that time with no interferences from the massive disturbances of today resulting from high density of household electronics. And at that time, the EU-stations had moderately week transmitters. Oh those good old days!
Radio Monumental is quite often heard on 1510 but with terrible modulation, however. To get an ID is thus far from easy.I have some four hours of recordings of the station on different dates but only during ca 2 minutes of these four hours can you get some details. Yesterday I sent a f/up to the station and Franklin Chavez almost immediately answered with a short e-mail.
The logging of La Voz del Istmo in Panamá on January 31, 2009, during Pertti Äyräs and mine once-in-a-life time pedition to Lemmenjoki – LEM274, was definitely one of the best catches during said pedition. It is not very easy to pass RCN Barranquilla during cx towards Colombia and Panamá! As far as I know the station has been heard only once before in Finland: Matti Jääskeläinen’s logging of the station back in 1963!! Prior to our 2009 logging, the previous loggings in Scandinavia have been made in 1972 by Leif Blomqvist in Halmstad and Lars-Eric Svensson in Kvänum, both in Sweden. A short email from sbaretto77@hotmail.com verified my reception of HOXO in 2009.
Heard already on February 9, 2006 in Lemmenjoki, but received a confirmation just recently from José Alves, Diretor.
Here in Scandinavia 1560 is normally dominated by ZYH526 R Povo Pombal, Ribeira do Pombal, BA and during more southernly La Plata cx by ZYJ501 R Grande Rio, Itaguai, RJ. Other stations that have been sporadically heard in Scandinavia are, e.g, ZYH622 R Difusora Vale de Curu CE; ZYH903 R Agua Branca, Vitorino Freire MA; and during the last year also ZYJ— R Barigui, Almirante Tamandaré PR on a clear split of ca 1559.820.
I heard OAZ4W Radio Feliz in Lima AM 1110 on February 9, 2012 in Lemmenjoki, Finland. Today I received a confirmation on my reception from Juan Pablo Maldonado Zegarra. Mil gracias Juan Pablo!
A surprising cuban logged during LEM290 in February 2010 answered with an email from Liuva.24@rsagua.icrt.cu. I already had a QSL from the station after a visit to Cuba in late March 2010 celebrating my 60th anniversary together with my family. Included an audio mp3 from the logging moment in Lemmenjoki.
XECH on 1040 was heard on February 2, 2009 during LEM274, the maybe best pedition ever for Pertti Äyräs and myself. XECH or “Radio Capital” and at that time also using the slogan “La Romantica de Corazón” is situated in Toluca, Estado de Merida. After I sent a couple of f/ups during the last months I finally received a confirmation. An audio mp3 spanning some 50 minutes was included! Marvelous!
