Listening to radio stations from the Americas

CP... Radio Bendita Trinidad 1540

Radio Bendita Trinidad was heard here in Borgå at my home QTH with strong signal during a good opening towards Bolivia on May 9, 2013. A total of six bolivians where noted. Similar cx was observed in Sweden (and Norway) but one day laterr, on May 10! On May 10 there were no signals to mention from Bolivia in the Southern parts of Finland. Interesting indeed! When I heard Bendita they were carrying the phone-in program “Saludos y Bendiciones”. A long email letter from the station’s big boss Mario Mujica was received in a day. Thanks to Henrik Klemetz (HK) for helping me to get this nice QSL.

From Mujicas letter one notes that Radio Bendita Trinidad Group has the following stations: La Paz-El Alto 1540 AM; Cochabamba 1480 AM; Stanta Cruz 1480 AM; Tarija 1480 AM; Montero 89.1 FM and Blanket 102.7 FM. It should be noticed, that 1480 carries three relay stations in three different cities. The station on 1480 has been heard in Sweden and Finland recently, but now it is unclear which transmitter site!

Radio Revolucion 840

Radio Revolución, Palma Soriano (Santiago de Cuba) was heard over the more common cuban CMHW “Doble-W”) in Santa Clara on October 22, 2011.  The frequency holds quite a few stations from the Caribbean and Latin America that have been audible in Scandinavia including also 4VEH, Haiti; R Nacional, Panamá; WXEW Yabucoa PR in addition to som rare stations from México. The frequency is normally dominated by R Bandeirantes and R Salta during cx from Brazil/La Plata and by the two listed Venezuelans.

Miguel Noa Menendez kindly verified my email report instantly. Gracias Miguel!

Radio Liberdade 1500

Rádio Liberdade was surprisingly found when going through some audio files from LEM319 in October 2012. The station faded up with a simple “Rádio Liberdade AM 1500 kilohertz” and the ID was also verified by Pertti Äyräs and Jari Ruohomäki. Thanks boys!

The city of Cangucu is located some 300 km southwest of the State Capital Porto Alegre and some 50 km west of Pelotas and holds some 60.000 inhabitants.

This log was a real surprise, since 1500 holds a number of Brazilian stations that are commonly heard here up in the north such as Jacuípe, BA; Montanhesa, MG; Floresta, PA; Fraternidade, SP and Cumbica, SP. The frequency has, however, not given too many logs from Brazil during the last couple of years – maybe because of the state of the present solar cycle. Who knows.

It was satisfying to get a short confirmation from Rádio Liberdade in less than a day!

Radio Frequencia_2 1380

Rádio Frequencia was surprisingly fading up with a “Rádio Frequencia News 1380 kilohertz” ID on late October 2011 in Lemmenjoki. The frequency is a gold mine with quite a big number of stations that have never been heard in Scandinavia. The stations transmits from Garopaba, a beach side Santa Catarina city, that has been completely changed since the 1970s when it was a small fisherman town. Today Garopaba offers nice hotels and many first class beaches.

Thanks – Muito Obrigado to Bel Cristini for a rapid confirmation and to Pertti Äyräs and Jari Ruomomäki for checking my audio file.

R MONUMENTAL 1080

Radio Monumental transmitting from Chaco-i/Asunción  is a fairly new station beginning broadcasting on November 1, 2010. I managed to hear the station in October 2011 with a relatively stable signal but of course heavily splashed by EU-stations. The frequency 1080 is a difficult one what comes to hearing stations from Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. By far the most common South American stations to be heard on this frequency in Scandinavia are the Venezuelans R Barcelona and R Venezuela of Maracay followed by the Colombians R Eco, Cali and R Autentica, Villavicencio.

R Monumental is transmitting 24 hours a day with a varying program format. Some of the station’s key persons are Carlos Baez, Luis Bareiro, Ruben Rodriguez, Kike Casanova, Oscar Acosta and Menchi Barriocanal.

After a couple of email reports I finally got a short confirmation of my reception of R Monumental via Facebook.

ZYK354 R Rosario 1210

Rádio Rosario, Serafina Correa, RS was heard in Lemmenjoki in October 2010 on 1190 surprisingly fading up over R América, Buenos Aires with a pretty good signal just in time for a local break after the top of the hour and before the start of programming from Milícia da Imaculada. A nice confirmation was received via Facebook from Camilia Panassolo. The first BRA-verification on 1190  for me from one of the southern states of Brazil.

The frequency 1190 is occupied by a number of Brazilian stations all of which have the possibilities of being audible in Scandinavia during selective openings. During more northerly  cx the most common Brazilians here are CBN Natal RN, R Juazeiro BA and R Rio Vermelho GO. R América BA, however, usually completely dominates the frequency during southernly cx making it difficult  for stations from the states of, e.g., SP, RS, SC and PR to be audible.

Rádio Rosario was established in mid-December 1984 and serves the entire Serafinense region of Rio Grande do Sul and mostly carries religious programming..

KWKH 1130               kwkh

KWKH in Shreveport, LA is definitely not the easiest NA catch in Scandinavia on 1130 that usually is blocked by WBBR, WDFN, KTCN WISN and CKWX depending on conditions. Common for these are that they are all News/Talk or Sport stations. In October 2011 KWKH was easily distinguished from these by it’s country music format. Unfortunately though, KWKH changed to all sports on May 31, 2012 so now it will be even more difficult to distinguish it from the rest with the same type of format.

A short Facebook message confirmed my reception report and mp3 audio. KWKH today goes under the name “1130 The Tiger”.

WGIG_logo

WGIG with it’s “Real Radio” slogan  surprisingly managed to fade up over the 1440 dominants WRED, WMAX and WHKZ. Operations Director Scott Ryfun rapidly confirmed my report. Thanks Scott!

KVOR 740 AM

KVOR was heard last October 2012  in Lemmenjoki when I was expecting KVOX. The very similar calls should make one careful. Fortunately the stations carry different formats KVOR being News/Talk and KVOX Fox Sports. KVOR IDed as “7-40 KVOR and KVOR FM Depend on It”and was  followed by local weather for Colorado Springs and Southern Colorado. A nice reply arrived almos instantly from Gina Kavali, Director of Interactive Marketing-

LT12 Radio General Madariaga

I have been hunting for LT2 Radio General Madariaga in the Province of Corrientes for decades without success. Earlier in the 70’s and 80’s the most common Argentinian, even though also a difficult one, was Radio Bahía Blanca. Nowadays LV9 Radio Salta is by far the most common Argentinian on 840 and tend to be very strong during cx off the Greater Buenos Aires area. Salta is located in the northwestern corner of Argentina bordering in the north to Bolivia and in the west to Chile. Corrientes again is located in the northeastern corner of the country bordering to Paraguay.

LT12 was heard in Finland already in 1974 by Roland Sandberg (RS) and in 1985 by JPR according to lists. In Lemmenjoki LT12 phaded up only for a short while over R Salta in October 2010. I recently received a confirmation of my reception and now the only Argentinian on 840 missing in my collection is Radio General Belgrano in Buenos Aires. This station was heard together with Pertti Äyräs during LEM317 in February 2012, as we believe fpr the first time in Finland. Since, Jari Ruohomäki (JPR), has heard General Belgrano and he also managed to get a QSL, something I have not yet succeeded with yet.
